Bell: Let’s Talk Day

If you didn’t listen to the radio, watch the news, or read about it online somewhere, Bell Media launched a viral campaign called, “Let’s Talk Day”, to raise awareness for mental health. There are a lot of note-worthy causes that are supported by big names, but this has by far gotten much more attention and reach than other one-day campaigns. By mid-day, the campaign had already received 32M shares and raised $1.6M. Not only are advertisements being shared on Facebook, and hashtag BellLetsTalk trending on Twitter, but in order to promote mental health, professionals are going to public schools to speak to young minds about the initiative.

While Bell is supporting a great cause by raising social awareness on an increasingly significant issue.

Bell is putting their money where their network is. They are supporting the cause by donating 5 cents for every share, like, hashtag, etc. that this campaign receives today. This incentive makes an already shareable notion, easier to share. They are also leveraging the upcoming Olympic games with the choice of spokesperson.

Mental health conditions are comparable to physical health conditions in many ways: they take many forms, they are distinct from the people who experience them (so we refer to “an individual with schizophrenia” rather than “a schizophrenic”), and they are treatable. Bell created a subpage for this campaign that tracks the social reach of the “Let’s Talk” initiative. Visiting it throughout the day has definitely been inspiring for users to continue sharing the stories and raising awareness for the cause of mental health.

On top of the social media incentives of donating 5 cents each, Bell will also be donating 5 cents for every text message sent and mobile or long distance call made (by Bell customers only) today. If that isn’t a way to encourage talking, I don’t know what is!

Facebook Marketing: A Starter’s Guide

Facebook last reported having 1.1 billion active users a month and since its inception in February 2004, it can unanimously be agreed upon that it is one of the most successful social networking sites ever created. It isn’t just successful in the sense that it can connect old friends, lovers, and family – but it can also connect businesses to consumers. Facebook Marketing was dimly understood when the opportunity to place advertisements on the site was first implemented. In recent years, they have developed an interface that is much easier to navigate and much easier to assess.

It may seem intimidating at first, but here are a few things you might want to look out for before you post your first Facebook Marketing activation:

1. Demographic and more:
You will notice as you choose a certain age range, countries, gender, marital status, etc. that the number of possible reach will increase/decrease. Be specific about exactly who you’re targeting: you don’t want to pay for impressions that are not in your target market. Niche marketing is where it is at, so if you want to speak to a certain segment of your primary target, you can do that too. Facebook enables you to target Women,  who are interested in food and dining, and who are parents….etc… It’s not only demographics but psychographics as well.

2. Bids:
This is how much you’re willing to pay per click, impression, or like. You can customize your Facebook Marketing campaign so that you only pay when a user clicks on the advertisement (or simply sees it). You can also choose the option to only pay if the user ends up liking the page that the advertisement was made to promote. Your choice should depend on the purpose of your campaign.

3. Tracking:
You can easily manage your ads in the “Ads Manager” button on your Facebook page. The data will be sorted by impressions (organic and paid) as well as the demographics that the advertisement is really appealing to. Like any project, it isn’t effective if you aren’t going to learn from it – figure out what worked, what didn’t, and how you can make it even better next time.

Unlike renting space to place an ad, without real quantifiable statistics on how well the advertisement has done, placing an advertisement on Facebook can be measured accurately and in real-time. It can also be customized based on how much you want to spend and who you want to reach, specifically. Facebook Marketing is an effective and affordable way to maximize reach for your brand or campaign.

In our last blog we talked about SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and today we are going to cover SEM (Search Engine Marketing)  and Google.  SEM is essentially the process of gaining traffic and visibility from search engines through paid advertising and unpaid advertising in Google, Yahoo, Bing, Facebook, LinkedIn and other social media applications and on-line websites and blogs.

First and foremost, you need to make sure that your business and/or company is part of the Google family! So be sure to set up your Google accounts as there are several different platforms from Google, so the more user-friendly you are with these tools the more savvy you will be with SEM.

At the #GA Summit a new set of API’s (Application Programmable Interface) were announced to help large companies and their web developers and IT Departments better manage their metrics.  These upgrades allow users to seamlessly integrate their software with Google Services such as Google Analytics, Google Adwords and YouTube. As many large corporations have unique demands, manage several websites and have many users.  The new API’s will streamline configuring the reports from Google Analytics and cut the amount of time spent reviewing and compiling all of this information so that IT Departments and Marketing can spend more time analyzing the factual insights.

Google Platforms:

Google +: If you are not using Google Plus properly this will affect your ranking with Google and ultimately your SEO or Search Engine Optimization.  So make sure you have an account and are updating your account with newsworthy content! Google Plus content helps you with your page rank, and your information stays around for a long time! 

Google Analytics: If you are looking to boost sales, improve your mobile app and increase the number of visitors to your website, Facebook followers, Twitter followers, you need to be using Google Analytics and you need to be reviewing this on a regular basis.

Google Tag Management: Just recently, Google has added a new feature called Google Tag Management , which was launched at the #GASummit last week Link to summit .  The theme this year was ACCESS, EMPOWER, ACT with numbers and metrics.  VP Engineering Paul Mure and Product Management Director Babak Pahlavan talked to the masses about what is coming down the pipeline for Google Analytics. So it was not surprising that Google launched Google Tag Manager. As Tagging is vital to your Search Engine Marketing and performance. Google Tag Manager will help you manage your metrics through Google Analytics and your conversion rates. You can click here to hear the live stream from the #GASummit.

Google AdWords & ADVERTISING: How Google AdWords work is that you set up an account and pay based on a cost-per click.  You can also set the payment parameters base on a daily budget that you and your client are both comfortable with. The best part about Google Adwords is that there is no minimum and you are not locked into a contract.  You are only charged when someone clicks on your ad to go directly to your website. Again essential for Search Engine Marketing.

YouTube: Again if you are looking for more opportunities for your SEO and SEM make sure you are up-loading content on YouTube. Control your story, start a conversation and keep your audience growing with YouTube and be sure to use YouTube analytics!

 

 

Quality Control: How to avoid BIG MISTEAKS

I looked up and high on the shelf in the Dollar Store was a giant eraser with the words “We Make BIG Misteaks”.  I thought it was funny and not so funny.

Not so funny when you are the one making those misteaks.

I bet Lululemon doesn’t think making misteaks is funny after their recall of yoga pants in March because you could see through them. The recall amounted to approximately $67 Million in sales, a big chunk of change but small change when last year’s revenue was close to 1.4 Billion.

The supplier said they followed specifications so what happened?

Maybe the Chief Product Officer knows. He was fired immediately.

Then, three months later after the excitement settled down it was announced that the CEO, Christine Day would step down.  She gave no explanation for leaving.

Looks like that was a big misteak somewhere. But where:  Lululemon or the supplier?  The Product Officer or the CEO? We may never know.

We can only hope it doesn’t happen to us.

If don’t want to make big misteaks like Lululemon I have two recommendations to help you ensure product quality control.

Define Guidelines

An important way to ensure quality control is to have specific written guidelines for your product. These standards must be followed at all times. Do not turn a blind eye and make the excuse to let it pass just this one time. If you turn a blind eye to quality you are on a slippery downward slope.

Teach your vendor about your products

Having a good relationship with your vendor will go a long way to getting good results. Help them understand and teach them what is important about your product . Regularly rank your vendors so you can determine which of them needs improvement and work on getting that improvement.

By making these recommendations I am not meaning to act like I know better than Lululemon. I’m not. It’s hard to beat a Billion dollars in revenue.  But what I do know is I can protect my business ….and with all pun intended … that’s the bottom line.

Pinterest: The Building Blocks of Business

Pinterest is a virtual tool that provides an extraordinary sharing platform like no other. 3H has a Pinterest account where we dedicate boards to our pins about useful business to business content. Our strategy is to engage and inspire followers, business-related or not, and give an insight to the marketing, advertising and social media world from our perspective. #5/38 Niche is where it’s at:  This is the most important benefit and feature of the Social Media channel. Social Media is truly all a about finding your niche…and building your community…no matter how big or small.  If you want to push a product or idea you’ve got to speak the same language as your customers and online fans. When you find your grove, don’t leave it – build on it.

#13/38 Social Media is not a popularity contest.  As much as we all want thousands of followers, it doesn’t mean anything if you’re not connecting with your audience and building solid relationships. A twitter account boasting  10,000 followers may not be able to engage all 10,000 in the way that a smaller account of 500 followers can. It’s about engagement and influence. It should always be about quality, not quantity. You want to make sure people are actually listening to you, reading and reacting to your content.  Great content breeds followers.

2/38 Get out there. This is a great one: Get out there!! Don’t be afraid to learn as you do. If you wait to learn about it all, you’ll never jump in…. or out! Don’t just tweet and post and expect results – you need to do your research, find bloggers, influencers and jump into the social-sphere of communication.  Be different, stand out and reach a curious audience with a positive tone and an up-to-date experience. And oh…by the way, this is my way of getting out there!
